THE
613th COMMANDMENT
|
 |
| |
 |
According to our tradition there are
613 commandments in the Torah. Among the 613 is the commandment
to actually write one's own copy of Torah Scroll. Today
only professional scribes are able to fulfill with that
commandment. Other Jews though may commission a scribe
to write by hand a copy of the Pentateuch on parchment
in order to comply with personal mitzvah of writing a
Torah Scroll. |
To write a scroll is a personal obligation
therefore an inherited scroll may not exempt a heir from the
commandment to write a new one. The commandment to have Torah
Scroll written will be accomplished even if several Jews share
the cost of commissioning the writing of an entire scroll. Moreover,
even if a person can afford sponsoring ONE letter being written
on the parchment in a new Torah Scroll, completed at the communal
request, he still is considered as the one who performs the
commandment. Women may as well participate in that mitzvah by
commissioning the scribe to write the Torah Scroll on their
behalf. |
